Kindergarten News

Dear Families

It was so nice to meet all of you in your homes or at school!!  I hope that it makes the first day less stressful on our students.  I know it has helped me.  I can’t wait to see all of you on Tuesday morning.

I will be out on the playground on Tuesday morning starting at 8:15 in case if you would like to take a first day of school picture with the teacher.  You are welcome to line up with us at 8:30 when the bell rings and come in the school to help your student get settled.  At 8:40 our Principal, Ms. Carter, will come by and let you know it is time for us to start the day.

I would also like to introduce our wonderful para educators for kindergarten this school year😊

-Mrs. Tommerup (Mrs. T.) is in Mrs. Thisselle’s  classroom full-time. She will also be on the playground and at lunch with the students.

-Mrs. Bermingham is in my class full-time. She will also be on the playground and at lunch with the students.

-Mr. Oppedahl is split between both classes and he will be out on the playground/lunch as well.

Jefferson’s Universal Rules: We are respectful, responsible, and safe! We are all learners and we are creative! Our goal is to be kind to all.

Things to Remember:

SNACK TIME- as of now we are having snack time twice a day. Students are allowed 1 snack per snack time. You can send 2 snacks with your child for the day or place some in his/her locker. Students can also opt to get 2nd Chance Breakfast during our morning snack time. This is a charge on their account. Please talk to your child about what they are doing for snack time😊

We do not have any peanut allergies this year.

Early release Mondays- every Monday school is dismissed at 2:30

School wide Birthday invitation policy- birthday invitations can only be passed out at school if EVERY student is going to receive one. These little ones are very aware and get hurt feelings when they are left out. Thanks for your understanding.

Reading/Writing

1st names- writing 1st name beginning with a capital letter and the rest lowercase.

Counting how many letters in 1st name.

Naming the letters in 1st name.

Listening to stories for enjoyment and for details (comprehension)

recognize/produce rhyming words

Syllables

Letter names/sounds- Aa-Cc will be our focus this week. We will also be working on writing these letters.

Math/Calendar

Calendar Time- months, days of the week, number of days in school, counting, weather

Recognizing numbers 0-10

Counting objects 0-5

Orally counting 0-20

Social Studies/Science/art

Nursery Rhyme Book- students are creating a Nursery Rhyme book that will be brought home soon!

September calendar- each month students will create a calendar to bring home!

Social Skills- Mrs. Hilliard, our school counselor, will be teaching Social Skills classes every week.

Our school nurse, Mrs. Leonard, will also be discussing handwashing, covering coughs/sneezes, and head lice. Please talk with your child about these topics as well at home.

Questions to ask student/ Things to work on:

-Help your child practice writing his/her first name.  Practice beginning with a capital letter and lowercase letters for the rest. Name the letters and count them. Move to last name when first name is accomplished!

-Rhyme Time- Tell your child 2 words that rhyme. Have them add another rhyming word. Give 2 words that don’t rhyme…have them correct the words to make a pair of rhyming words. Ex. Cat/bat, king/ring, set/met, bed/red.

-Practice counting with your child! Counting to 100 is our goal for the school year!

It is going to be a great year!!!
