Welcome to 2nd Grade! My name is Roni Hawkins and this is my fourth year teaching 2nd grade at Jefferson Elementary. I began teaching in 2000 in Hays, MT at the Hays/Lodgepole Junior High. I also taught 5th grade in Browning before returning to my hometown to be close to family. Prior to moving into 2nd grade, I worked with the Indian Education For All team for the district. My husband Zach and I have two boys. Andrew is a 3rd grader at Bryant Elementary and Eli will be starting Kindergarten this year!
In this classroom we will have lots of fun, become wonderful writers, create amazing artwork, and learn a lot!
We will strive to always follow our Jefferson Universals!
Today we had a great time working with our kindergarten buddies in Mrs. Putnam’s class. We learned what makes a leave green and why it changes color in the fall. Then students worked with their buddy to identify characteristics of their leaf such as size, shape, color, and the number of veins. After students completed their information sheet and “named” their leaf, they got to create their own leaf using a coffee filter and water colors which will be put together in a buddy tree display in the hallway. It was a great way to finish off our Monday!!
Below is the link to the brainpop video we watched about 9/11.
Today in class we learned about 9/11 and what happened on this historic day. Students watched a short video which explained what happened, looked at a few pictures from the day, wrote a reflection piece, and created an art project which reminds us to always be tolerant of those who are different than ourselves. While this is a very tough topic and event for 2nd graders to understand, my message to them and focus of the lesson was to always “Remember Tolerance”. Please take a moment to reflect with your child about this event as I imagine they may have more questions or thoughts that they may wish to discuss further. I have included the link for the video we watched as well as some pictures of our project we completed.
Today was a big day in 2nd grade! We have members of the Helena Brewers Baseball Team visit our classroom and spend some time with us! Players Payton Henry, Jose Gomez, Karsen Lindell, and pitching coach Rolando Valles talked to the kids about baseball, answered questions, and visited with them about the importance of reading! They also played Heads Up 7-Up and Red Light-Green Light with the kids! It was a very fun visit for the kids! Here are some pictures for you to enjoy!
We had a great 1st day in 2nd Grade!! It was a busy day meeting friends, learning the Jefferson Universals, and doing a few fun projects. This first week we will spend a lot of time creating our 2nd grade family, learning the rules, and adjusting to life back at school.
Next week we will begin diving into our reading and math curriculum. As we begin with our regular work, please note that students may not bring papers or work home everyday. There are some days where all of our work will be done in class and there may not be worksheets or such to bring home. Spelling words will most often come home on Monday and we will have our spelling test on Friday. Please help and encourage your students to study their spelling words every night. You can also following the spelling city link on my webpage as a way to study and practice spelling words online.
In 2nd grade we do still have a snack time every morning. Please send your child with a small healthy snack each day. If you are unable to send a snack, I will try to have one available for them. If any families would like to contribute a snack to the class for those who aren’t able to bring one or forget, that is always appreciated. Bulk items such as pretzels, goldfish crackers, and graham crackers from Costco are always a great option.
We are off to a great start and I think I must be the luckiest teacher here at Jefferson! I have the BEST class in the school! Cheers to a fabulous year!
